Vibrogrooving funnels debris between friction pair into grooves, while FriCSo’s polymer lapping adds an oil-retaining organic nano-layer, hardens the metal surface, and produces an extremely flat, smooth superfinished surface. FriCSo polymer lapping is performed in-line on the existing superfinishing machines. No capital expense and no change in production throughput are required.
• 30% reduction in coefficient of friction compared to steel-on-bronze pair
• Reduces cost by 25% compared to steel on bronze pair
• In-line process eliminates logistics overhead and external production delays
• The graph below shows the coefficient of friction between a standard, commercially finished piston pin and a bronze bushing in a block-on-roller test using a single drop of oil. The load was increased at fixed intervals from 445 N (100 lbs) to 2 225 N (500 lbs), the rotational velocity between the two elements was fixed at 20 RPM, and the temperature was fixed at 250°C.
Results: the coefficient of friction varied from 0.9 at the lowest load to 1.9 at the highest load.
• The graph below shows the coefficient of friction between a standard, commercially finished piston pin and the steel journal bearing after FriCSo’s polymer lapping treatment (without bushing) under identical conditions to the graph above.
Results: the coefficient of friction varied from 0.05 to 1.4, representing a dramatic decrease in COF compared to the use of a bronze bushing.
