Bearing area is structured and polymer-finished by FriCSo. Grooves & Polymer retain oil which increases performance in all regimes of the stribeck curve.
Industry/market
Camshafts for internal combustion engines
The Challenge
The camshaft test was initiated with three main goals to achieve:
Reduce camshaft friction
Reduction of the coefficient of friction (COF)
Improve wear resistance
Solutions
FriCSo’s polymer lapping adds an oil-retaining organic nano-layer, hardens the metal surface, and produces an extremely flat, smooth superfinished surface. FriCSo polymer lapping is performed in-line on the current through-feed superfinishing machines. No capital expense and no change in production throughput are required.
Results
Reduction in friction losses by close to 30% in engine working temperature of 90 -110 centigrade
Potential improvement in fuel efficiency as a derivative of significant friction reduction
